Greater Manchester Police have issued a safety update ahead of what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends of the year at Manchester’s Christmas Markets.
Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to Manchester city centre this weekend as the Christmas Markets enter a peak period. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed that additional patrols and public safety measures are in place to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending.
Local neighbourhood officers will be on visible patrol across all market sites, ready to support families, young people and anyone in need of assistance. Officers will be engaging with the public and on hand to provide help, reassurance and guidance.
GMP is working in close coordination with British Transport Police, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Mayor’s Office as part of a joint effort to manage public safety across the city centre.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: “We want everyone to enjoy the markets and the festive atmosphere in Manchester. Each year, we have comprehensive plans in place for the Christmas Markets and this weekend is expected to be one of the busiest.
“We have worked with several partners to ensure we have a coordinated approach to safety, and our officers will be out and about, ready to help. Please approach us if you need assistance, we’re here to make sure everyone has the safest experience possible.”
The force says its officers are fully briefed and will respond to incidents proportionately, prioritising public engagement and only using enforcement powers where necessary. GMP is also maintaining close links with support services to offer additional care to those who may need it during the event.
Officers will continue to assess and respond to any developing risks over the weekend to ensure an appropriate level of policing is maintained at all times.
The Manchester Christmas Markets opened earlier this month and have already attracted large crowds. The event is one of the biggest in the UK, drawing visitors from across the country and abroad.
