Salford has secured back-to-back victories at the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships in Ramsbottom, with Ged Flan taking the 2025 crown a year after fellow Salfordian Harry Ogden claimed the title.
Ged Flan topped the leaderboard on Bridge Street, knocking the most Yorkshire puddings from a 20-foot plinth with his black pudding throws. He beat competitors from across the UK and overseas, including entrants from Japan, Peru, Australia, Canada and Spain.
The quirky contest, staged outside The Oaks pub, dates back more than a century and is rooted in the old Lancashire–Yorkshire rivalry. Each competitor paid £2 for three attempts, with proceeds going to local charities.
Among this year’s competitors was Japanese comedian Daisuke Miyagawa, who has 1.6 million followers on Instagram and filmed a special programme about the event. He managed to score four hits, earning cheers from the crowd.
The 2025 championships were held in memory of long-time organiser Phil Taylor, who died earlier this year. After the event was initially cancelled in July, volunteers stepped in to keep the tradition alive. Host Paul Jenkins said afterwards: “Phil, I hope we did you proud. Rest in puds mate.”
Alongside the throwing, a free music festival called Pud Rocks ran behind The Oaks, with 15 live acts performing on two stages dedicated to Phil Taylor and Harrison Rothwell, another Ramsbottom figure remembered this year. Proceeds went to Bury Hospice.
For Salford, it marks two years of success at the world championships, with 19-year-old Harry Ogden winning in 2024 and now Ged Flan taking the crown in 2025.
