Supporters of Salford City Radio are being encouraged to raise funds for the community station simply by shopping online, at no extra cost to themselves.
The fundraising platform easyfundraising allows people to generate donations for a chosen cause when they shop with more than 8,000 participating retailers.
The scheme works by redirecting shoppers through the easyfundraising website, app or browser extension before they complete a purchase. The retailer then pays a small commission to easyfundraising, which is passed on as a donation to the selected cause.
According to the company, more than 2.5 million supporters and 190,000 causes are already registered on the platform. Donations are funded by retailers rather than shoppers, meaning there is no additional charge for the person making the purchase.
Supporters can raise funds in three main ways. They can download the free mobile app, available on iOS and Android, and shop directly through it. They can install a browser extension known as Donation Reminder, which alerts users when a retailer is offering a donation. Alternatively, they can visit the easyfundraising website, log in, select a retailer and complete their purchase as normal.
Retailers donate because the scheme drives customers to their websites. The platform generates income by taking a small percentage of the commission paid by retailers, with the remainder going to the chosen cause.
For Salford City Radio, community support through schemes such as this can provide a steady stream of small but valuable contributions. As a local radio station serving Salford, additional income can help cover running costs, equipment upgrades, training opportunities and community projects.
Community radio stations typically rely on a mix of grants, sponsorship and public support. Encouraging listeners to sign up to platforms like easyfundraising offers an accessible way for people to contribute without making a direct donation.
Residents who wish to take part can search for Salford City Radio on the easyfundraising website, register as a supporter and begin shopping through the platform.
