New speed camera vans to target Greater Manchester speeding hotspots

Greater Manchester Police has increased its speed enforcement capability with the introduction of two new vehicles aimed at tackling dangerous driving across the region.

The additional vehicles will increase the force’s specialist speed enforcement fleet from three vans to five.

The new vehicles will be used by Greater Manchester Police’s Safety Camera Unit and will operate across all ten Greater Manchester districts, targeting areas where speeding has been identified as a concern through data, intelligence and community reports.

Police say the additional vans will provide a more visible presence on roads and help tackle excessive speeding, which remains one of the main factors linked to fatal and serious collisions.

The vehicles have been funded by Transport for Greater Manchester on behalf of the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership and form part of wider efforts supporting the Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate deaths and life changing injuries on Greater Manchester’s roads by 2040.

The additional resources will support targeted speed enforcement operations, deployment to locations highlighted by residents and elected representatives, and wider road safety work.

Michael Hewitt said, “These additional vehicles represent a significant enhancement to our operational capacity.”

He added, “Increasing our fleet to five dedicated enforcement vehicles means we can be present in more locations, more often, targeting those areas where speeding presents the greatest danger to our communities.”

Peter Boulton said, “Speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal and life changing injuries across the UK, and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death.”

He added that the vehicles would provide a visible deterrent to dangerous driving behaviour and support Greater Manchester’s wider road safety ambitions.
