Firefighters were called to Forest Bank Prison on Sunday evening after reports of an attempted fire inside a prison cell.
Three crews attended the scene and helped make the area safe before handing it back to prison staff.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the prison at around 6.20pm on Sunday 17 May.
Fire engines from Whitefield, Broughton and Agecroft stations were sent to the incident.
The spokesperson said the incident involved an attempt to start a fire within one of the cells.
Firefighters remained at the scene for around 30 minutes before leaving the site in the care of prison staff.
