A Salford homelessness charity is urging people across the city to step forward and take part in a 28 mile fundraising challenge to help secure its long term future.
Emmaus Salford has launched its Mile In Their Shoes campaign, calling on individuals, businesses, colleges and community groups to walk or run 28 miles in 28 days this February.
The charity has supported more than 775 people over the past 11 years, offering a home, tailored support and work opportunities to people who have experienced homelessness.
Its community home in Pendleton is based on Fitzwarren Street. However, the lease on the building expires in February 2028. The charity says urgent funding is needed either to relocate or to carry out essential refurbishment work to protect the future of the service.
To highlight the urgency, supporters are being asked to complete 28 miles during February. Participants can take part individually or join a group event.
Among those taking part is Malcolm, who now studies at college with the aim of building a career in psychology while also helping in the Emmaus Salford charity shop.
He said when he was homeless he often had to walk long distances to attend appointments with very little food or money.
Malcolm said he is walking to show solidarity with people who are homeless and to raise both funds and awareness so others do not have to face the same experience.
Supporters can also join a Walk For Good event starting from the charity’s base on Fitzwarren Street at 9.30am on 17 February.
Organisers say taking part in Mile In Their Shoes or attending the Walk For Good will help ensure Emmaus Salford can continue providing accommodation, support and opportunities for people experiencing homelessness beyond 2028.
