A Salford homelessness charity is appealing for support to help families in poverty and people with experience of homelessness this festive season.
Emmaus Salford has launched its Christmas Kindness Appeal, calling on local businesses and the public to help raise £4,000 to ease financial pressure on struggling households. The funds will provide supermarket vouchers to families who use Lucie’s Pantry, a social supermarket based on Fitzwarren Street, and to formerly homeless individuals supported by the charity.
Salford is among the hardest-hit areas in the UK, with new figures from the Office for National Statistics showing 30% of children in the city now live in poverty—well above the national average of 19%. The local unemployment rate and number of benefits claimants also remain significantly higher than national levels.
Jackie Smith, Chief Executive of Emmaus Salford, said: “We see the relief vouchers bring for families who are feeling the strain at Christmas time. By donating to the Christmas Kindness Appeal, you will be helping families afford food, buy that winter coat or give a little extra to children in the household.”
The charity is asking for donations in multiples of £10 to meet its target. Reaching the £4,000 goal would ensure every family and supported person receives a voucher in time for Christmas.
Alongside financial donations, Emmaus Salford also encourages businesses, organisations and individuals to contribute by volunteering, donating goods, or organising fundraising events.
The appeal comes as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite. Lucie’s Pantry offers affordable food and household items to individuals and families referred by support services, helping them make ends meet while maintaining dignity and choice.
