Police have renewed appeals for information one year on from the discovery of the body of a newborn girl, known only as Baby Ava, in a secluded area of woodland in Little Hulton.
Greater Manchester Police are now offering a £50,000 reward for information leading to the identification of Baby Ava and an understanding of how she came to be left in Ashtons Field, where her remains were found on 20 November 2024.
The reward is being provided by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and marks the most significant financial incentive offered since the investigation began.
Detective Inspector Louise Kelly from GMP’s Major Incident Team confirmed that despite months of investigative work, including over 200 lines of enquiry, DNA analysis, and community engagement, Ava’s identity remains unknown. “We have worked tirelessly to get justice for her,” she said.
Last month, officers shared a new detail in the case: a pair of women’s large-sized underwear found with Ava, decorated with cartoon-style donkeys. Despite its distinctive design, no viable leads have emerged.
Around 1,000 leaflets have been distributed in the area and 20 forensic and child protection experts have supported the investigation to date. Police will be carrying out further house-to-house enquiries this week, particularly around the anniversary of the discovery.
“Our appeal remains primarily for Ava’s parents to come forward,” said DI Kelly. “To Ava’s parents, if they see this, we are here ready to speak to you and support you.”
The case has drawn significant attention in Salford and beyond, with the public and charities calling for answers and justice. No cause of death has been publicly confirmed, and police continue to treat the case with sensitivity.
Kate Green, Deputy Mayor for Safer and Stronger Communities, said the funding of the reward shows how seriously the GMCA is taking the case. “We are committed to supporting GMP in their efforts to find answers and bring closure,” she said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 1319 of 20/11/24, or to use the GMP Major Incident Public Portal.
