A major campaign has launched to celebrate 100 individuals who have helped shape Salford over the last century, as part of the city’s centenary events.
The University of Salford and Salford City Council are leading the new initiative, with residents urged to nominate people they believe deserve the title of ‘Salford Hero’.
Figures from across Salford’s cultural and community history are expected to feature, including well-known names such as actor Albert Finney, musician Peter Hook, and Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey. However, the project’s focus will also be on recognising local champions, those who quietly serve their communities and embody the ‘Spirit of Salford’.
Nominations are open now via the Salford Centenary website or by emailing salford100@salford.gov.uk. The project is calling for full names, reasons for the nomination, and contact details.
Once chosen, the 100 heroes will be profiled by journalism students at the university. Their stories will be published across social media, university platforms, and the official centenary website.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said the campaign was a unique opportunity to spotlight residents who have made a difference. “Whether it’s a famous person you’re proud to call a fellow Salfordian, or that person at the end of your street who always goes the extra mile, we want to hear about them,” he said.
“This is your centenary year and your chance to help us celebrate the people who make our city what it is.”
The campaign sits within a broader year-long programme of events marking 100 years since Salford became a city. Cultural showcases, civic ceremonies and community-led projects are all planned throughout 2025.
University of Salford journalism lecturer Robin Brown is co-ordinating the project with the council. He said the students were excited to get started: “This is a chance to tell some truly inspiring and unique stories. It’s not just about the past, but about the people making a difference in Salford today.”
