Michael James Felse the Reform UK candidate has been elected as a councillor in Salford, marking the party’s first seat in the city. The newly elected member said the result reflected a demand for change among local voters.
Speaking after the result, Councillor Felse said he was “absolutely delighted” with both his team and the support received from residents who turned out to vote. He described the campaign as a positive experience and said the outcome represented a historic moment for the party locally.
He said he expected to be the only Reform representative on the council for a short period, adding that he hoped more colleagues would join him following further elections in May.
Felse also addressed the wider political context, pointing to his previous membership of the Labour Party and saying dissatisfaction remained among some former members. He said it was for Labour to reflect on its position rather than for him to offer advice.
Outlining priorities for Barton and Winton, he said he had been concerned by conditions in the area during the campaign. He highlighted issues including litter and potholes and said improvements to basic services should be prioritised.
He also referred to investment in local facilities, saying there needed to be a balance between major projects and everyday concerns raised by residents.
Felse continued by saying that voters had supported him because they wanted change and improvements in their area, adding that he intended to work with the community to deliver those outcomes.
Thanking supporters, he said he was grateful for the backing he had received and noted that the role would initially be for a one year term ahead of the next election cycle.
Reflecting on his decision to join Reform, he said he had been struck by the enthusiasm of party members and compared it to his early years in politics.
